The tomato is a vegetable originating from an area of the American continent between the current Mexico and Peru.
It was imported to Europe around the middle of the 16th century, when Hernàn Cortès, returning to Spain, brought some specimens with him.
After about fifty years, the vegetable also landed in Italy, where it found ideal soil and climatic conditions in the southern area of the country.
A century later, when cultivation had reached a good diffusion, the berries began to change color, passing from the original intense yellow color to red.
